First, Mainstream TPE materials cannot be naturally degraded.

As a matter of fact, most of the TPE materials that we come into contact with in our daily life cannot be degraded naturally; TPE is a petroleum-based synthetic polymer with a stable chemical bond in the main chain of the molecule, which is difficult for microorganisms to decompose in nature, and will exist in the natural environment for a long period of time after being discarded, and it may be crumbled into microplastics, which is potentially threatening to the ecology.

Second, the environmental advantages of TPE

TPE's environmental advantages are mainly reflected in the recyclability. It has thermoplasticity and can be re-melted and shaped after heating, and the edges, spouts and recycled products can be reused after processing, which can reduce the consumption of wastes and virgin materials, and is in line with the concept of circular economy.

Third, the distinction between the relevant concepts and the current situation of biodegradable TPE

It is necessary to distinguish between biodegradable and biobased concepts: biodegradable means that the material can be decomposed by microorganisms, and biobased means that the material originates from biomass, which are not necessarily related, and it is difficult for biobased TPE to be naturally degraded.

At present, biodegradable TPE is in the research and development stage, although it can be decomposed under specific conditions for a short period of time, it is still facing the problems of high cost and no large-scale commercialization.
