Manufacturer Reference Guidelines | Seven Criteria to Help You Choose the Right TPE Material!

There is a wide variety of TPE materials, covering multiple systems such as styrene-based, polyolefin-based, polyurethane-based, and polyester-based. The differences in performance resulting from varying chemical structures are significant. Therefore, when selecting materials, you should not rely solely on the broad category name “TPE,” but rather compare key performance indicators item by item based on the actual application scenario. TPE manufacturers now present seven key dimensions to help you carefully identify high-quality materials.

What are these seven dimensions?

Hardness, tensile strength and elongation at break, temperature resistance, weather resistance and aging resistance, environmental friendliness and compliance, cost, and supply stability

I. Hardness

Hardness is the first step in material selection. TPE covers a wide range of hardness levels, from extremely soft to relatively hard. The hardness requirements for toothbrush handles and tool handles are completely different; hardness directly affects grip comfort, compression resistance, and resistance to deformation.

II. Tensile Strength and Elongation at Break

These two metrics reflect the material’s mechanical performance. High tensile strength makes the material less prone to breaking, while high elongation at break indicates good ductility. For applications involving repeated bending or impact, a combination of high elongation and moderate strength is more suitable. Some low-hardness TPEs, though soft, have low strength and are prone to tearing, requiring formulation adjustments to achieve a balance.

III. Temperature Resistance

Heat resistance varies significantly among different TPE materials. Standard types have lower heat resistance, while hydrogenated materials exhibit significantly improved heat resistance, and TPV can even withstand long-term use at higher temperatures. For products involving high-temperature sterilization or high-temperature environments, materials with high heat resistance ratings must be selected.

IV. Weather Resistance and Aging Resistance

TPE products used outdoors are exposed to UV radiation and moisture over extended periods, making them prone to yellowing, hardening, or cracking. Priority should be given to materials with strong UV resistance, such as SEBS with added stabilizers or TPV, which inherently possesses good weather resistance.

V. Processing Properties

TPE materials are typically processed via injection molding, extrusion, or blow molding. Key considerations include melt flow rate, processing temperature window, and adhesion to rigid plastic substrates. In overmolding applications, the bond strength between TPE and substrates such as PP or ABS directly determines whether the finished product will delaminate.

VI. Environmental Compliance and Regulatory Compliance

TPE used for food contact, children’s toys, or medical devices must comply with regulations such as FDA, RoHS, and REACH. Compliance statements and test reports provided by suppliers are critical criteria for material selection.

VII. Cost and Supply Stability

Price differences among various TPE types are significant; SBS-based TPE is more economical, while TPU and TPEE are more expensive. Provided performance requirements are met, the option offering the best cost-performance ratio should be selected, while ensuring stable raw material supply.

Only by systematically comparing these key indicators can one select the TPE material that truly suits the application, effectively supporting product performance, service life, and market competitiveness.

Therefore, as a TPE manufacturer, Zhongsuwang’s design engineers conduct systematic evaluations based on multiple dimensions—including hardness, mechanical properties, temperature resistance, weather resistance, processability, environmental compliance, and cost—while aligning with specific product requirements. When necessary, we also conduct small-batch trial molding and real-world testing to verify performance, enabling us to customize suitable formulations and create high-quality products for you.
